While on a New England summer vacation, I stopped at the Wild Goose Country Store in Sunapee, NH—a white-sided building marked by two white rocking chairs and a sentimental bicycle out front. Inside, I met with proprietress Sharon Parsons, who has owned the store for the last 11 years.

Sharon’s story with the store began 15 years ago when she asked if the owner would sell her pottery. The owner said yes, and also offered her a job. Sharon worked nearly full-time for four years before the owner encouraged her to purchase it. She describes herself as having “an old soul,” and while she loved visiting country stores during vacations, she never imagined running one herself.

Today, the Wild Goose Country Store operates seasonally during the summer and early fall. The interior showcases old wood beams and antique cabinetry, creating a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. Sharon stocks the shelves with the work of local artists and former students, maintaining a tradition of supporting community talent.

Her favorite part of running the store is the people. Many visitors arrive on vacation, in good spirits and without the rush of everyday life. She takes pride in slowing down the experience—even helping children count money to purchase their candy.

Challenges do exist, even in a small tourist, like Sunapee. Running the store cuts into her family time. But she views operating the Wild Goose less as a business and more as a community service, prioritizing connections and memories over profits.

During my visit, she pointed out unique items, introduced me to the local artists she represents, and even shared a fun fact: Steven Tyler’s favorite candy is Baked Beans. I took a box home to try—and found them surprisingly delicious!

The Wild Goose Country Store stands as more than a retail space; it’s a living piece of Sunapee’s culture, carefully preserved and shared by Sharon with each visitor who walks through its doors.
